CNAs, LPNs, and RNs
CNA duties, responsibilities
and qualifications
- Provides personal and direct care to patients in the form of assisting with dressing, bathing, and
oral hygiene.
- They lift residents, position residents, and observe residents to report physical and behavioral symptoms
to medical personnel in charge.
- A high school diploma or general education degree and usually six months related experience or training
are necessary to become a CNA.
LPN duties, responsibilities and qualifications
- Directs work of nursing assistants, administers medications, injections, and routine txs.
- Assists with general health care of residents, observes and records signs and symptoms of changes in
the resident’s condition or behavior.
- They must be a graduate of an approved Licensed Practical Nursing Program
RN duties,
responsibilities and qualifications
- RNs asses the condition and care of the clients to determine if there is a need to contact the consulting
physician.
- They instruct LPNs and CNAs in the proper care of clients.
- They take VS to detect deviations from the norms and they prepare care plans, assessments and pharmacy
audits.
- Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, training employees, planning and assigning work. They may also appraise performance, reward and discipline employees, address complaints
and resolve problems.

Army
Nurses
Overview and requirements
- Responsible for all aspects of a patient's care and see that they are addressed, and initiate the coordination
of a patient's multidisciplinary care.
- Have an ASN or a BSN for Army Reserve
- Have a BSN from an accredited school of nursing for active duty.
Academic
Nurses
Overview and Requirements
- College and university faculty who teach and advise students in basic and graduate degree programs in
nursing.
- Clinical Faculty members provide clinical supervision of students
- Instructors and clinical faculty most often have educational preparation at the master’s degree
level.
Psychiatric Nurses
Overview and Requirements
- Centered around meeting the health needs of patients, with a particular focus on mental health.
- Psychiatric nursing involves understanding not only the mental, but the biological aspects of human thought

- RN preparation
- Work experience in any setting where there was a focus on therapeutic communication is very important.
Nurse Midwife
Overview and Requirements
- Nurses who specialize in providing care to healthy women during pregnancy, childbirth, and after birth.
- Provide accessible, safe birth care especially in rural and inner city areas.
- Certificated as a registered nurse (RN), Certification in Midwifery, Bachelor’s Degree.
Forensic Nurse
Overview and Requirements
- Provide care to victims and are involved in the investigation of sexual assault, elder and spousal abuse,
and unexplained or accidental death.
- Certificated as a registered nurse (RN), Bachelor’s Degree
- May need SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) certification for some practice settings.
Disaster/Bioterrorism Nurse
Overview and Requirements
- Works in disaster areas that are a result of bioterrorist attack or in situations cause by natural disaster,
war or poverty
- Red cross nurses are often part of the network that provides assistance during times of disaster or conflict
- RN Preparation
- Red cross nurses must have special training.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Nurse
Overview and Requirements
- Care for patients undergoing cosmetic surgery to correct problems (e.g., face lift, breast augmentation)
or to reconstruct some part of the body from disease, accident, or malformations (e.g., skin lesions and tumors, burns, varicose
veins).
- RN Preparation
- Certification of CPSN (Certified Plastic Surgical Nurse).
Legal Nurse Consultant
Overview and Requirements
- Provide a variety of services to attorneys, insurance companies, and hospitals in legal matters where
health, illness, or injury are issues, such as personal injury, fraud, medical negligence, and abuse
- Educate attorneys regarding medical facts and issues relevant to the case.
- RN Preparation.
Infection Control Nurse
Overview and Requirements
- Specializes in identifying, controlling, and preventing outbreaks of infection in health care settings
and the community.
- Activates include the collection and analysis of infection control data, evaluation of infection prevention
and control measures, and education of individuals about infection risk, prevention, and control.
- Certificated as a registered nurse (RN), Bachelor’s Degree.
- Certification as an Infection Control Practitioner preferred.
